This live-in-the-studio set of four songs shows Axiom to be a formidable band even when unenhanced by overdubs. Their stock in trade is heavy, driving instrumental rock somewhere on the spectrum between math-rock and prog-metal — more toward the math-rock side to my ear. Axiom is a guitar / bass / drums trio based in Birmingham, England, and in pre-pandemic days they were making a splash on the festival circuit. All four tracks are solid explorations of the possibilities of the power-trio format, with both tightly arranged sections and freer parts for improvisation. All the players acquit themselves admirably, and the arrangements all flow nicely. I appreciate the fact that all the tracks are under five minutes as well — they say what they’ve got to say and don’t hang around for extensive solos or filler. It’s a great start from a talented band, and I look forward to their full-length debut, whenever that may be.
