Citizen Cain — Somewhere But Yesterday
(Festival 201212C, 1994/2012, CD)

by Mike McLatchey, Published 1995-03-01

Somewhere But Yesterday Cover art Further proving that the Genesis school of progressive remains in an exalted tier among the commandeers at SI (Synthetically Indignant — the original label for this album), here's the next hook, line and sinker for the big Fish, Citizen Cain. Are you sure all these British vocalists aren't all the same guy? Come on, let me in on this one. Actually vocalist Cyrus proves one thing - the United Kingdom's neo-progressive contingent still have singers that have better control over English than their European cousins. That's not a whole lot considering the instrumentalists do a decent job trying to be progressive. It's a wonder why they let so many lyrics clutter up the works. There are some nice key solos and flute, and the instrumental chops are certainly refreshing for a band that's gonna get hammered on the Gabriel/Fish thing. Gotta give 'em one thing — although the overall effect is typically overbearing, Citizen Cain prefers not to go too far past the early Marillion stuff and keeps the corny clichés to a bare minimum. This is a band that would have felt really comfortable on stage at the Marquee in 1983, and should go over a storm with the neo-phytes who don't mind heavily lyrical music. Definitely one of the future bright spots for SI (Stylistically Indifferent).
