The Finnish band Onségen Ensemble continues to grow and mature their sound with each successive album. For their third studio album, Fear, generation 2020 of the Ensemble is Pasi Anttila, Heikki Häkkilä, Esa Juujärvi, Merja Järvelin, Sami Lehtiniemi, Samuli Lindberg, Joni Mäkelä, Niina Vahtola, and Mikko Vuorela. The seven mostly-instrumental tracks are sweeping majestic cinematic excursions that blend Spaghetti Western, Gothic Western, and progressive rock. The music is as large as the American Southwest. At times savage and brutal metal prog, their sound is unique and quite engaging, especially the brass instrumentation. I am constantly reminded of Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, though Fear is light years beyond! The music flows smoothly from track to track as the music ebbs and flows. The entire album is excellent, and the band shifts focus on “Lament of Man” with its heavily distorted bass that locks into a groove that slowly increases the tempo to an amazing climax. The Onségen Ensemble has found their musical niche, and a fantastic one it is! if you enjoy epic aggressive progressive music that can easily accompany The Man with No Name or the barbarian horde thundering across the frozen tundra, check out Fear.
