Peel Dream Magazine — Moral Panics
(Bandcamp no#, 2020, DL)

Peel Dream Magazine, named in honor of famed British DJ John Peel, is a fairly new New York City based band. Their 2020 album, Agitprop Alterna, was a hit with their fans, and then in early July they had a surprise release with their Moral Panics EP. Not having heard their previous releases, I am somewhat at a disadvantage for comparison. The EP consists of six tracks, spanning roughly 18 minutes, of post-punk shoegaze music. The songs are simple, sometimes melodic, slow, and mournful. And the sixth track, “Clean Water,” is a lo-fi demo with vocals and guitar. The EP’s title comes from Stanley Cohen’s Folk Devils and Moral Panics and is purportedly the focus of the songs. However, the vocals are muddied, and therefore difficult to understand, so you just have to immerse yourself in the sound. While Moral Panics may be a nice diversion, it is not something to get overly excited about.
