Raoul Björkenheim / Krakatau — Ritual
(Cuneiform Rune 86, 1988/1996, CD)

Ah Krakatau's first album, another interesting choice by Steve Feigenbaum for reissue. Krakatau has resided in ECM's stable since their third album, and all are worth checking out. Raoul Björkenheim is just one of those intense guitarists, a man who just won't play it like you'd expect and wrings such tortured sonorities from his instrument. The music here is maybe more raw than the albums on ECM and thus more rocking, but I would probably say Live and Volition are more matured. Still with all the bonus tracks, this is still a good purchase for those who like the freer jazzier and more dissonant aspects of fusion, and if you're a guitarist you better sit up, as this guy is a true original.
