Curved Air

Profile
Curved Air is a pioneering British progressive rock group of musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds. They are famed for their live performances and 'Art Rock' music — the quasi classical imprints of Terry Riley hooked onto beautiful and demonic violin (originally provided by Darryl Way) combined with electronic adventurous synths and interwoven with brilliant guitar wizardry mesmerisingly embroidered by the subliminal and exotic presence of the unique lead singer Sonja Kristina. The band recorded three successful albums before breaking up in 1972. Due to financial and contractual reasons, the band regrouped and disbanded a number of times during the 70s, though they were unable to regain the success of their early releases. They split in 1976 and remained inactive until 1990 (though a 1984 Way / Kristina collaboration was released under the band name), when a series of one-off live performances began. The band formally regrouped in 2008, and has continued since with varying personnel accompanying Kristina.

Trey Gunn / Marco Minnemann - Modulator – From the outset this recording sounds like a modern update of Eddie Jobson’s UK on steroids, with a scoop of 21st century Crimson on top. It was arrived at in a fascinating way. Master...  (2010) » Read more

French TV - This Is What We Do – Sometimes I think French TV must be the result of a gene-splicing experiment combining DNA from Djam Karet and The Muffins. Then I hear a violin and that theory goes in the file with phlogiston and...  (2007) » Read more

Silver Apples - Silver Apples / Contact – Frankly, this is one of those reissues I thought I would never see. The (now long defunct) Kapp label issued these two albums in the late 60s, after which they quickly faded into obscurity. At a time...  (1994) » Read more
