Eric Allan Dolphy, Jr. (June 20, 1928 – June 29, 1964) was a jazz musician best known for his work on bass clarinet, alto sax, and flute. After playing shows for several years in his native LA, he moved to New York in the late 50s, where he began working with Charles Mingus. In 1961, he relocated to Europe, but returned to the US for further work with Mingus, John Coltrane, and others, as well as leading his own groups. Dolphy died in Berlin on June 29, 1964 from complications of undiagnosed diabetes.
