Best known as a member of Hawkwind, Nik Turner (26 August 1940 - 11 November 2022) has also played sax as a guest with many others as well as led his own space rock bands. A childhood friend of Robert Calvert, he originally offered his services to the nascent Hawkwind as a roadie, since he owned a van, but Calvert was intrigued by Turner's concept of "playing free jazz in a rock band" and invited him to join. He left the band in 1976, but continued musical activity within the extended Hawkwind family and around the world.
